CALL FOR PAPERS
INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON POVERTY ALLEVIATION STRATEGIES: EXPERIENCES AND NEW IDEAS 13-15 OCTOBER 2010 ISTANBUL-TURKEY
Poverty, due to the extent of the target which it covers and due to the severity of its effects both on individual and on community life, has always been a serious social problem which has been seen in all societies throughout the human history. It has a crucial place on the agenda of almost all developed-under developed countries at the present day too. Poverty alleviation has the potential which will serve direct and indirect purposes such as providing equal opportunities, preventing poverty from transferring among generations, providing fair income distribution, strengthening the human capital and thus contributing the national development. The failure on poverty alleviation results in emergence of opposite of the above-mentioned situations, which affects whole society adversely.
In order to implement efforts for combating with poverty as an agency of the state, General Directorate of Social Assistance and Solidarity, which has carried out various social assistance programs directly as a key actor in the field of poverty alleviation in Turkey since 1986 and which has an essential role in improving the income distribution and raising the social welfare level, has also made studies on the issue in cooperation with other public institutions, universities, international organizations and NGOs.
Within the context of 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion, in order to diminish poverty and to increase social solidarity an international symposium themed “Poverty Alleviation Strategies” will be held in Istanbul between 13 and 15 October 2010 by T.R. Prime Ministry General Directorate of Social Assistance and Solidarity. It is expected that the symposium will contribute to determination of national and international social policy strategies. Coming together of various actors working in the field of poverty alleviation such as public institutions, international organizations, local and international NGOs will help to develop poverty alleviation strategies on local and international scale by sharing knowledge and experiences and by developing cooperation opprtunities between institutions.
The symposium will bring together the scientists, researchers, national/international experts and executives from public/private sector and will make them share the knowledge and experience. It is aimed at sharing the studies on social policy and determining the efficient alleviation strategies against poverty. This symposium, which is a social event creating awareness against poverty in all parts of the society, will be carried out within the context of main themes stated below:
•New ideas and new trends for poverty alleviation •Human capacity building in poverty alleviation •Cooperation for poverty alleviation •Designing efficient poverty alleviation program •Impact assessment of poverty alleviation program

We welcome the theoretical and empirical papers which discuss these themes from different point of views.
Please note that the Symposium Organizing Committee will pay the travel (round trip) and accommodation expenses for the participants whose papers are accepted by the refereeing team for presentation in the conference. (If the paper is prepared by more than one person, only the main presenter’s travel and accomodation expenses will be covered.)
